University of Novi Sad, Serbia

The University of Novi Sad (UNS) was founded in 1960. It is the only state university in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, comprising 14 faculties and 2 research and developmental institutes. The activities of UNS are realized through fundamental, applied and developmental research and teaching in the field of natural, technical, social, humanistic and medical sciences as well as arts. Currently there are more than 400 ongoing research and academic international projects (FP6 & FP7projects, projects within EUREKA, COST, SCOPES, TEMPUS), as well as a certain number of mobility schemes (Erasmus Mundus Action 2, Campus Europae, CEEPUS, FORЕCAST, etc). Due to its reputation as one of the leading internationally-oriented universities in Serbia, Prof. Dr. Miroslav Vesković, Rector of UNS, has been given a key coordinating role for the Priority Area 7 within the EU Strategy for the Danube Region: Developing the Knowledge Society through Research, Education and Information Technologies.

As early as the Republic of Serbia joined the Bologna Process in 2003, UNS was already recognized by international experts and review teams as being the most reform-minded and innovative university in Serbia that appreciated the needs and benefits of international cooperation through active engagement in EHEA and ERA. It has been the leader in the promotion and implementation of the concept of internationalisation and the most active participant in the EU projects and networks Serbia was becoming eligible for during the last decade. Apart from project-related activities, UNS also fosters bilateral contacts with around 100 higher education institutions world-wide and contributes to the activities and discussions of various university networks and forums: European University Association, Danube Rectors’ Conference, European University Foundation – Campus Europae, Balkan Universities’ Network, Visegrad University Association, Associations of the Carpathian Region Universities, Uniadrion Network of Universities, etc.

With almost 48,000 students and 4,000 staff members and a pro-active international outlook on the development of higher education and science, the University of Novi Sad is an important HE stakeholder both in Serbia and its neighbouring region.
